Verizon Wireless TravelPass: What You Pay & What You Get
Verizon TravelPass is designed to provide predictable pricing for international phone use. Instead of fluctuating per-minute or per-megabyte charges, you pay a set daily fee only on days you actively use your phone in an eligible country.
Verizon TravelPass Cost
The daily cost for TravelPass varies depending on your travel destination:
- Mexico and Canada: $6 per day per device
- All Other TravelPass Countries: $12 per day per device
It's important to note that you are only charged for TravelPass on days when your phone performs an action that triggers a session (e.g., making or answering a call, sending a text, or using mobile data). If your phone is in Airplane Mode or not used for cellular service, you won't incur a TravelPass charge for that day.
Traveling to Multiple Countries in One Day?
If you travel to two countries with different daily fees within a single 24-hour TravelPass session (for example, you use your phone in Mexico and then in Italy), you will be charged the higher daily fee for that session. A new 24-hour session will then begin for the second country.
Good News for Mexico & Canada Travelers: Many of Verizon's current Unlimited plans automatically include calling, texting, and data usage when traveling in Mexico and Canada at no extra daily cost. If you have one of these eligible plans, you may not need TravelPass for these specific countries. Always check your specific plan details before your trip.
Verizon TravelPass High-Speed Data Allowance
Data usage is a primary concern for most international travelers. TravelPass offers a generous amount of high-speed data per session:
- 5 GB of High-Speed Data: Each 24-hour TravelPass session includes 5 GB of high-speed data. This is typically sufficient for everyday tasks like navigation, messaging, social media Browse, and light email.
What Happens After 5 GB? Once you've used up your 5 GB of high-speed data within a 24-hour session, your data speeds will be reduced to 3G speeds for the remainder of that active session. While slower, 3G speeds are generally still usable for essential functions like checking maps, sending messages, or light web Browse.
Need More High-Speed Data? If you find yourself needing more high-speed data during an active TravelPass session, Verizon offers the option to purchase additional data. You'll typically receive a text message offer to buy an extra 2 GB of high-speed data.
- Cost for Additional Data:
- $5 for an extra 2 GB in Mexico and Canada
- $10 for an extra 2 GB in other TravelPass countries
- You can usually accept this offer by replying "speed" to the text message, and you can purchase these additional data allowances multiple times within a single 24-hour session if needed.
The "3 TravelPass Days" Perk
For users on certain Verizon Unlimited plans (such as Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Welcome), there's an additional perk that can offer significant savings:
- What it is: For an extra $10 per month, you can add the "3 TravelPass Days" perk to your plan.
- How it works: This perk grants you three TravelPass days each month that you can save up.
- Accumulation: You can save up these days for up to 12 months, accumulating a maximum of 36 "free" TravelPass days.
- Usage: These accumulated "free" days are used automatically before any paid TravelPass sessions, potentially saving you money. For instance, using three "free" days would save you $36 compared to paying the $12 daily fee.
