The New iPhone Charger Is a Game-Changer—Here's Why

Apple recently unveiled a new charger alongside the iPhone 17, and it looks pretty standard. The “Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max” might sound boring, but it’s more advanced than it seems.
For a long time, this was the first charger to support the new USB PD 3.2 AVS protocol. Turns out, Google beat Apple to it with its own Pixel charger. However, Apple’s charger has a unique trick up its sleeve: Dynamic Power Source (DPS).
What Makes This Charger So Special?
DPS allows the small 40W charger to temporarily deliver a fast 60W charge. It can only do this for about 18 minutes, but that's plenty of time to get your iPhone 17 charged up to 50% in 20 minutes.
It's not a great fit for a MacBook Pro, which needs a sustained 60W, but it's perfect for a quick phone charge.
The charger also uses AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply), which is now required for many new chargers. AVS is all about efficiency. It lets the charger provide a very specific voltage to your phone, which reduces wasted energy and heat.
You won't find the terms AVS or DPS on Apple's product page, but they are printed on the charger itself. So, if you want a compact adapter that can deliver a powerful, quick charge to your new iPhone, this seems to be the only option available for now.
