Get Starlink for $15/month in New York: What You Need to Know

SpaceX Starlink is now offering a $15 per month internet plan in New York State, specifically designed for low-income residents, to comply with the state’s affordable broadband law.
This new "New York Affordable Broadband Service Plan" delivers slower speeds than Starlink's standard offerings and requires customers to purchase the $349 Starlink satellite dish.
Context of the Law
The New York Affordable Broadband Act, which took effect earlier this year, mandates that internet service providers serving over 20,000 households in the state offer plans with at least 25 Mbps download speeds for no more than $15 per month to consumers enrolled in low-income assistance programs.
Starlink’s Compliance and Details
While SpaceX initially sought an exemption from the law in January, arguing it was below the 20,000 household threshold and that a $15 plan represented an "unreasonable" 87.5% revenue reduction, the company has now moved to comply.
The new $15/month New York Affordable Broadband Service Plan is essentially a restricted version of Starlink's "Residential Lite" service plan.
While the standard Residential Lite plan typically offers download speeds between 40 to 130 Mbps for $80 per month, the New York-specific plan caps download speeds at 25 Mbps.
For comparison, Starlink's regular $120 residential tier provides even faster median download speeds, reaching 104 Mbps in Q1 according to Ookla.
It's worth mentioning that Starlink, as a whole, has yet to consistently meet the FCC's minimum broadband speed metric of 100 Mbps for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads.
How to Get the Plan
To access the New York Affordable Broadband Service Plan, eligible New York residents must place an order specifically for the Residential Lite plan on Starlink.com.
SpaceX's policy states: "If you select any other service plan, you will not be eligible for the New York Affordable Broadband Act Service Plan."
After placing the order, customers will need to contact SpaceX's support team to finalize the $15 per month deal.
Broad Context
This move comes as SpaceX actively seeks to expand its user base across the US through various discounts and promotions, including offering free Starlink dishes in some instances.
