Verizon Phones Stuck in SOS Mode Amid Widespread Outage
On Saturday, Verizon customers across the country had major issues with their phones. Many reported that their devices were stuck in SOS mode, which only allows for emergency calls.
Reports of the outage began around noon on Saturday and peaked with nearly 23,000 complaints on the outage-tracking site, DownDetector. The problems were reported from California to Florida.
Verizon noted a "software issue" and that its engineers were working to fix it. The company apologized for the inconvenience and said service was "starting to see restoration" by 9 p.m. ET.
Some customers were upset, saying the problem was much more widespread than Verizon admitted. One customer in Los Angeles said the outage affected their entire family and all their friends with Verizon.
A similar Verizon outage in October 2024 caused over 100,000 reports on DownDetector.
